Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering (Hons)

The Course:

The Mechanical Engineering programme provides a strong base in the Mechanical Engineering with a well-established balance between theory and experiments during the four years of study. The curriculum consists of a good mix of general courses as well as core Mechanical Engineering courses. A total of 127 credit hours of courses being taught in 8 semesters and on average there are 5-6 courses per semester being taught. The programme also contains a compulsory Industrial Training attachment after semester 6 for a period of not less than 12 weeks. The idea of this attachment is to enable students to gain firsthand experience in industry as well as an insight to how theories are put into practice in the real engineering situations. This short attachment in industry was beneficial as it provides the intellectual challenge to students especially in the final year and when carrying out their final year project.

Graduates of the B.Eng. (Hons) (ME) programme can work as mechanical engineers in a broad area of applications which include industries such as automotive, power plants, chemicals, processing, aerospace, computer, machine tool and many others. Mechanical engineers are also engaged in a variety of activities including design, manufacturing, research, development, testing, construction, operation, sales, management, consulting and teaching.

Career Scope and Placement Prospects:

As the Working criteria of a mechanical Engineer changes according to the type and domain of the company they are working with and field of specialisation we can broadly say that a mechanical Engineer works how to Design and control a system that goes into the process of manufacturing the machinery and product. He tests new systems for feasibility and efficiency and carries out Quality management and improvement process.

Mechanical engineers work in the automotive, aerospace, chemical, computer, communication, paper, and power generation industries.

It has a tremendous scope in automobile engineering, cement industry, steel, power sector, Hydraulics, Manufacturing plants, Drilling and mining Industry, Petroleum, Aeronautical, Biotechnology and many more. With its wide scope of application, mechanical engineers remain always in demand, no matter which part of the world.
